Waziristan militants announce Eid ceasefire

MIRANSHAH: Pro-Taliban tribal militants announced on Monday to stop attacks on security forces after a unilateral ceasefire in South Waziristan, a spokesman for the militants said.

Local Taliban commander Gul Bahadar ordered all militants to stop attacks on the military on account of Eid, which falls on Friday.

Spokesman Ahmedullah Ahmedi told local reporters that the decision was taken as a mark of respect for the holy Islamic festival. “We will observe unilateral ceasefire from Monday (December 17) to January 1 next year,” the spokesman said. “We will not fire at security forces nor will they be kidnapped during this period”. During Ramazan, the militants did not announce any such ceasefire and Monday’s decision was a surprise for many. staff report
